My Free Zone Company Doesn’t Trade Inside the UAE — Do I Still Need a TRN?

This is a real, common situation: a Free Zone company with all its customers and suppliers based outside the UAE, wondering whether it needs a Tax Registration Number (TRN) at all.

The general rule: VAT registration in the UAE is triggered by taxable supplies made within the UAE. If a business genuinely has no UAE-based buyers or sellers — no taxable supplies made or received in the UAE — it can fall outside the VAT registration requirement entirely, regardless of turnover.

But “outside the UAE” needs to be tested carefully, not assumed:

• Do you have any UAE clients, even occasionally?
• Do you import goods or services into the UAE at any point?
• Do you hold any UAE bank relationships or contracts that create a taxable presence?

If the answer to all of these is genuinely no, the company is likely out of scope for VAT and doesn’t need to register or file returns. If any of those apply — even partially — the mandatory threshold (AED 375,000 in taxable supplies) or voluntary threshold (AED 187,500) may kick in, and skipping registration becomes a real exposure, not a grey area.

This is a facts-and-circumstances question, not a one-line rule. We’d rather confirm it properly for a client once than have it surface as a problem during a future audit or bank compliance check.
