How Often Do I Actually Need to File VAT Returns in the UAE?

Most VAT-registered businesses in the UAE file quarterly, but “most” isn’t “all,” and getting this wrong is an easy way to rack up avoidable penalties.

How your filing period is set: the FTA assigns your VAT period when you register, generally based on your turnover. Smaller and mid-sized businesses are typically placed on a quarterly cycle. Businesses with higher turnover can be moved to monthly filing. Your tax period is shown on your FTA portal — it isn’t something you choose freely.

What’s actually due each period: you report your output VAT (VAT you charged on sales) and your input VAT (VAT you paid on business purchases), and pay the net difference. If your input VAT exceeds your output VAT, you can carry the credit forward or apply for a refund.

The deadline that catches people out: both the return and the payment are due within 28 days of the end of your tax period — not 28 days from when you get around to preparing it. Filing late and paying late are penalised separately, so a return submitted on time with a late payment still triggers a fine.

If you’re not sure which filing period you’re on, or your last quarter’s numbers didn’t reconcile as cleanly as they should have, that’s worth catching now rather than at your next deadline.
