5 VAT Compliance Habits That Actually Keep UAE SMEs Off the FTA’s Radar

People often ask how to “ensure VAT compliance” as if it’s one big project. In practice, it’s a small number of habits repeated every tax period:

  1. Reconcile input and output VAT every period, not just before filing. Waiting until the deadline to reconstruct three months of invoices is where errors — and missed input VAT recovery — happen.
  2. Keep tax invoices that actually meet FTA format requirements. A supplier invoice missing a TRN, or a proper description of goods/services, isn’t reliably deductible even if you paid VAT on it.
  3. Track your registration threshold continuously, not annually. If you’re growing, monitor rolling 12-month turnover against the AED 375,000 mandatory threshold — the obligation to register kicks in the moment you cross it, not at year-end.
  4. Separate zero-rated, exempt, and out-of-scope supplies in your bookkeeping from day one. Reconstructing this classification after the fact, especially for exports or Designated Zone transactions, is where most disputes with the FTA originate.
  5. Retain records for the full statutory period. UAE VAT law requires records to be kept for a minimum number of years — discarding them early because “the filing’s done” removes your ability to defend a position if the FTA asks later.

None of these require expensive tooling — they require consistency. Businesses that get audited without stress are usually the ones doing these five things monthly, not the ones with the fanciest accounting software.
